In July 2024, Statybų inžinerinės paslaugos, UAB entered into a contract with the Administration of Kaunas City Municipality for the preparation of the Technical Working Design for the project “Pedestrian and Cycle Paths in the Aukštieji Šančiai Oak Grove, Kaunas City, Cadastral Plot Nos. 1901/0188:219 and 1901/0188:43: Simplified Construction Design.” The design was completed in the second quarter of 2026.
The project area covered approximately 39.3 hectares of the Aukštieji Šančiai Oak Grove, located between Verkių, Piliečių and Ašmenos Streets in Kaunas. The site was characterised by challenging terrain, valuable mature vegetation and a sensitive natural environment. Accordingly, the design solutions were developed to ensure functional infrastructure, visitor safety and minimal environmental impact.
The preparation of the Technical Working Design included an assessment of the existing recreational infrastructure, an analysis of pedestrian and cyclist movement patterns, and the selection of engineering solutions that took account of the site’s natural and cultural values. New pedestrian and cycle paths were designed to provide convenient connections between the main points of interest and ensure seamless integration with the existing urban infrastructure. The design also incorporated the actual alignments of established movement routes and informal connections. Elevated boardwalks were introduced where required to protect the root systems of mature trees.
In response to the site’s topographical conditions, timber stairways and elevated boardwalk structures were designed for sloping areas and environmentally sensitive zones. These solutions minimise disturbance to the natural terrain, protect tree root systems and support the long-term durability, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure.
The project also included the layout of street furniture, the creation of rest areas, visitor information facilities, lighting and other utility infrastructure. Dedicated dog exercise areas, a basketball court and children’s playgrounds were designed, together with information signage, to enhance the site’s suitability for recreation and nature-based leisure. Car parking facilities were provided at the main access points to the site.
As the project area forms part of the Natura 2000 network, the design solutions were developed with due consideration for applicable environmental constraints and statutory requirements. The design process included an assessment of the existing site conditions and the condition of protected habitats, valuable vegetation and other natural features. Infrastructure solutions were selected to minimise environmental impact and preserve the ecological value of the site. The design documentation identified mature oak trees in which specimens of the Hermit Beetle (Osmoderma barnabita), a protected species listed in the Lithuanian Red Data Book, had been recorded.
Part of the project area was located within cultural heritage protection zones encompassing the foot of a hillfort and a German military burial site. The design solutions were therefore developed in compliance with applicable cultural heritage conservation requirements. Where necessary, archaeological investigations were carried out and archaeological monitoring was provided during excavation and other groundworks.
Once implemented, the project will establish a coherent and functional pedestrian and cycling network, improve access to the area, enhance the recreational potential of the Aukštieji Šančiai Oak Grove and facilitate sustainable visitor use while safeguarding the site’s valuable natural and cultural environment.
